| Beschrijving voorzijde | Cast brass cash coin of traditional East Asian form, featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square border. Four Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom), 平 (left), forming the legend 平常通寶 (Pyong Sang Tong Bo), meaning 'Pyong [an] Ordinary Currency.' The characters are rendered in standard script within a plain round field, with a raised rim encircling the entire obverse. |

The 1 Mun Pyong was struck at the Pyongyeong office, one of several government bureaus authorized to mint cash coins during the Joseon dynasty's final decades. By the early 1890s, the Korean monetary system was under severe strain from Japanese commercial penetration and the flood of Chinese cash coins crossing the northern border, both of which undercut domestic issues. This particular office's coins are distinguished in the catalog by their mint mark and are generally less frequently encountered than output from the central Seoul facilities.
