Obverse description Cast brass cash coin of traditional East Asian form, featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square border. Four Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom), 平 (left), forming the legend 平常通寶 (Pyong Sang Tong Bo), meaning 'Pyong [an] Ordinary Currency.' The characters are rendered in standard script within a plain round field, with a raised rim encircling the entire obverse.
