Obverse description Cast cash-type coin bearing four Chinese characters arranged radially around a central square hole. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常平 (Sangpyeong) identify the Joseon government agency Sangpyeong-cheong (Ever-Normal Bureau); reading right to left, the characters 通寶 (Tongbo) denote 'circulating currency.' The legends are rendered in traditional Chinese regular script (kaishu), with one character positioned in each cardinal field relative to the central perforation.
