Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain inner border. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常平 (Sangpyeong) identify the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) treasury administration; reading right to left, the characters 通寶 (Tongbo) signify 'circulating treasure,' the standard denomination legend of Joseon cash coinage. The field is plain, and the legends are rendered in regular script (Kaishu) in a traditional East Asian cast-coin format.
