| Obverse description | Round cast bronze cash coin featuring a central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion in the field. Reading top to bottom and right to left in the traditional manner, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Circulating Treasure,' the standard inscription employed on Joseon dynasty cash coinage. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) with raised relief against a flat field, with 常 positioned above the square perforation and 平 below, 通 to the right and 寶 to the left. The coin exhibits a plain raised rim encircling the design, and the surfaces show the characteristic granular texture and patination typical of period Korean cast coinage. |
