正面描述	Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform layout within an inner raised square border. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the conventional cash coin manner: 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Currency,' the official legend of the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyongcheong (Office of Ever-Normal Treasury). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and cast in relief against a flat field. A raised outer rim encircles the entire obverse.

The mint mark 圻 (Ki, denoting the Kwangju Township Military Office in Kyonggi Province) appears at the top position; the series number 九 (9, meaning 'nine') is placed to the left; the character 天 (Cheon, meaning 'Heaven,' indicating the first position in the Thousand Character Classic sequence used for serial designation) occupies the bottom position; the right position appears blank or bears a worn mark. A raised outer rim borders the reverse field.
