The "Kae" and "Sun" characters on this piece identify it as a product of the Kaesong government office mint, one of dozens of semi-autonomous casting bureaus authorized to produce 1 Mun coinage during the Joseon dynasty. Rather than a centralized mint system, Joseon relied on episodic casting campaigns spread across military offices, government bureaus, and royal agencies — each authorized body adding its own identifying characters, which is precisely what the Oseong reference system catalogs. By the 1830s, currency reform debates were already circulating in court, but no structural change came until much later.
