The characters are read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 常 (top) and 平 (bottom) denote the Sangpyeong Ever-Normal Treasury, while 通 (right) and 寶 (left) together form the term for 'circulating currency.' The calligraphy is rendered in regular script (kaishu), typical of official Joseon cash coinage, with characters set in the plain field between the square perforation and the raised outer rim. |
