Obverse description Cast bronze cash coin with a central square hole. The obverse bears four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the central aperture, reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), the standard legend of the Joseon-era Sangpyeong Tongbo coinage. The characters are read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 常 (top) and 平 (bottom) denote the Sangpyeong Ever-Normal Treasury, while 通 (right) and 寶 (left) together form the term for 'circulating currency.' The calligraphy is rendered in regular script (kaishu), typical of official Joseon cash coinage, with characters set in the plain field between the square perforation and the raised outer rim.
