| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash-type coin with a central square hole surrounded by a raised square border. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the four cardinal positions around the central perforation, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (right), 寶 (bottom), 通 (left), 平 (top), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), the standard monetary inscription of the Joseon dynasty. The flat field between the raised rim and the square hole is plain, with no additional decorative elements. |
