| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim, with the four-character Sangpyong Tongbo legend arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation in traditional Chinese regular script (kaishu). Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the characters 常 (Sang) and 平 (Pyong) appear on the vertical axis, while 通 (Tong) and 寶 (Bo) occupy the horizontal axis. The legend translates as 'Ever-Constant Circulating Treasure,' the standard inscription used on Joseon Dynasty cash coinage. The field between the inner square rim and the outer border is plain and slightly concave, typical of cast Korean cash coins of this period. |
