| Obverse description | Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform orientation within a plain circular border. Reading clockwise from the top: 常 (Sang), 寶 (Bo), 平 (Pyong), and 通 (Tong), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Currency,' the standard inscription of the Joseon Dynasty cash coinage. The characters are rendered in regular script (楷書) and occupy the cardinal positions around the central perforation. |
