The Joseon court authorized expanded cash coin production in the 1850s partly to finance military infrastructure as coastal defense concerns intensified following increased Western naval activity in East Asian waters. These coins circulated alongside a chaotic mix of older issues from multiple authorized mints — the Joseon government never fully standardized production, and individual casting quality varied considerably between furnaces even within the same mint's output.
