The obverse bears four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform around the central perforation: 常平 (Sangpyeong) reading top to bottom, denoting the Sangpyeong agency (Ever-Normal Treasury) of the Joseon Dynasty, and 通寶 (Tongbo) reading right to left, meaning 'current currency.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) within a plain, undecorated field.

A series number is positioned at the bottom, with the numeral 十 (10, indicating series 10) recorded for this variety; additional serial numerals occupy the left or right positions depending on the series.
