The Joseon treasury mun coinage was cast rather than struck, produced at multiple government furnaces simultaneously under quota systems that varied by bureau. The Hojo, as the central finance ministry, operated its own furnaces in Seoul and oversaw disbursement to meet state expenditure — not market demand. Quality control across casting runs was inconsistent by design, and coins from the same issuing authority in the same year can differ noticeably in alloy color, flan thickness, and edge finish.
By 1852, Joseon's monetary economy remained heavily supplemented by grain and cloth transactions; the mun circulated primarily in urban markets and for tax obligations.
