Obverse description Central square perforation flanked by two vertical columns of Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu). Reading top to bottom in the right column: 常平 (Sangpyeong), the name of the Joseon-era Ever-Normal Treasury office responsible for currency issuance. Reading right to left in the horizontal register: 通寶 (Tongbo), the standard classical term denoting official currency. The four characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, a convention standard to East Asian cast cash coinage of the period.
