Obverse description Classic cash-coin design featuring four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged around a central square hole. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the four-character legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying the issuing authority — 常平 (Sangpyong), referring to the Joseon Dynasty's Ever-Normal Treasury (Sangpyeongcheong) — and 通寶 (Tongbo), meaning 'circulating currency.' The characters are cast in raised relief within the inner rim surrounding the square perforation, with a plain outer rim encircling the field.
