Issued under King Yeongjo's sweeping 1757 monetary reform, the 1 Mun Chong was part of a deliberate effort to standardize the chaotic coinage that had proliferated across Korea since the late 17th century, when dozens of government offices and military commands were each independently authorized to strike cash coins. KM#224 is one of several distinct varieties distinguished by the foundry characters cast into the reverse — small differences that document which of the many minting authorities produced a given piece.
