| Obverse description | Cast brass cash-type coin featuring a central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within the coin's field. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner, the obverse bears the four-character reign inscription 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Circulating Treasure,' rendered in regular script (kaishu). The characters are contained within a raised inner square rim surrounding the central perforation, with a raised outer rim encircling the entire coin. |
