Yanagimoto was a small hatamoto territory in Yamato Province — not a true han but a direct-retainer holding — which makes any surviving exchange office paper from this domain genuinely uncommon. Domain notes of this type were issued under Tokugawa-era regulations permitting local authorities to circulate scrip backed by rice or silver, with the monme denomination tied to silver weight standards still in use among merchant guilds in the Yamato region.
The 1796 date places this during a period of significant han fiscal stress across Japan, following the Tenmei famines of the 1780s. Many small domain offices that issued notes in this window were unable to redeem them and closed within a generation.
