| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash-type coin with a central square hole framed by a raised rim. Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around the central perforation read clockwise from the top: 洪 (top), 通 (right), 寳 (left), and 武 (bottom), together forming the legend 洪武通寳 (Hóngwǔ Tōngbǎo), meaning 'Currency of the Hongwu era, first emperor of the Ming Dynasty.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in raised relief against a flat field, with a raised outer rim encircling the design. This obverse is a Japanese private-mint imitation of the authentic Chinese Ming Dynasty Hongwu coinage. |
