正面描述 Cast copper alloy cash-type coin featuring a central square perforation flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain inner border and raised outer rim. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional East Asian convention, the four Kanji characters 寛 (above), 通 (right), 寶 (left), and 永 (below) together form the legend 寛永通寶 (Kan'eitsūhō), signifying 'Currency of the Kan'ei Period.' The characters are rendered in a bold, slightly archaic script style typical of Tokugawa-period cast coinage, with details of individual stroke forms varying by mint and die variety. The flat field between the characters and the square hole is unadorned, and the broad raised rim frames the design with a clean, functional aesthetic characteristic of Japanese Edo-period mon coinage.

附加信息

The Kan'eitsūhō was first issued in 1636 and became the dominant everyday coin of Edo-period Japan for over two centuries — a remarkable institutional continuity. The "new type" designation reflects a subtle but deliberate standardization reform undertaken around 1668, when the Shogunate moved to tighten die quality and flan preparation after decades of inconsistent provincial output from dozens of authorized mints scattered across the country.

The blank reverse — as opposed to the wave-pattern reverse of earlier issues — is the cleaner, later production standard that dominated through the Kyōhō era.
