| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a raised rim on both inner and outer edges. Four Chinese kanji characters are disposed in the four cardinal positions around the central square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 寛 (kan) above, 通 (tsū) to the right, 寶 (hō) to the left, and 永 (ei) below, together forming the reign-era monetary legend 寛永通寶 (Kan'ei Tsūhō, meaning 'Currency of the Kan'ei era'). The characters are rendered in a bold, archaic clerical script style typical of Edo-period cast iron coinage, set in a plain field within a wide, flat border. |
