Obverse description Round cast copper coin with a large circular central perforation. Four Chinese characters are arranged in the four cardinal positions around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 箱 (Hako), 通 (tsū), 館 (date/kan), 寶 (hō), together forming the legend 箱館通寶 (Hakodate-tsūhō). The characters are rendered in a bold, slightly archaic clerical script style characteristic of Edo-period cast coinage, raised in relief against a flat field, within a plain raised rim.

Reverse description Plain flat field with a large circular central perforation, bearing a single Chinese character 安 (An, abbreviation for the Ansei era) positioned above the central hole. The character is rendered in bold relief in a brushwork-influenced clerical script, consistent with the casting style of the obverse. The field is otherwise unadorned, enclosed within a plain raised rim.
