Obverse description Four large cast Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner: 元 (top), 通 (right), 和 (bottom), 寶 (left), together forming the legend 'Genna Tsūhō' (Currency of the Genna era). The characters are boldly rendered in relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a raised rim encircling the design. Two varieties are known, distinguished by relative character size (large and small).

Reverse description The reverse is essentially plain, with the central square perforation surrounded by a smooth, undecorated field and a raised outer rim. A faint horizontal raised line or vestigial mark may appear across the field below the square hole, consistent with known examples of this type; no additional legend or ornamental device is present.
