Shah Alam II was, by 1788, emperor in little more than title — effectively a pensioner of the East India Company following Clive's acquisition of the diwani rights in 1765. The Bengal Presidency continued striking mohurs in his name for decades after Mughal authority had collapsed in any practical sense, a fiction of legitimacy the Company found commercially and diplomatically convenient. KM#112 is a fixed-date type, meaning the coin carries a frozen regnal year regardless of actual striking date — pieces attributed to 1788 may have been produced considerably later at Murshidabad or Calcutta.
