Obverse description The obverse bears multiple lines of Persian-script legend in Nasta'liq calligraphy arranged within a rectangular cartouche at centre, containing the royal titles and name of the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II. The field surrounding the central cartouche is filled with additional Persian inscriptions disposed in the upper and lower registers, separated by ruled lines. Decorative pellet ornaments and foliate flourishes fill the interstitial spaces, rendered in the bold, deeply-struck style characteristic of Jaipur mint hammered gold coinage of the late 18th to early 19th century.
