Sayaji Rao III had already been Gaekwad of Baroda for over sixty years by 1938, making this coronation issue something of an anomaly — he was commemorating a reign that had begun in 1875, not marking a new one. The occasion was the diamond jubilee of his accession, and the gold mohur was struck as a formal prestige piece rather than a circulating coin. Baroda's mint output during his rule was generally modest, and gold issues were produced in small numbers for ceremonial distribution.
Sayaji Rao died just two years later, in 1939.
