The lower register records the mint formula 'Struck in…' with the mint name partially illegible. Lozenge and dot ornaments punctuate the inscriptions throughout the field. |

Hassan Nooraddeen I ruled the Maldives twice — his first sultanate ended with deposition, and this gold mohur dates to his second reign, which began in 1779. The mohur denomination itself was borrowed from the Mughal monetary tradition, a reflection of the Indian Ocean trade networks that made the Maldives commercially significant far beyond its size. Gold coinage from the Maldives in this period is exceptionally rare in any form; the islands' everyday economy ran on the cowrie shell, which was harvested there and exported by the ton to West Africa and South Asia.
