The four quadrants formed by the cross contain additional Devanagari legends recording the ruler's name and titles. Decorative scrollwork and floral ornaments occupy the interstitial spaces around the central device, with a crescent moon visible in the upper field. Additional information

Rana Bahadur Shah came to the throne as an infant in 1777, and his reign through the 1780s and 90s was effectively controlled by a succession of regents amid fierce factional struggle within the Shah court. He was eventually declared insane, forced to abdicate in 1799, and exiled to Varanasi — one of the more chaotic royal exits in Nepalese history. Coins struck under his name during this period reflect an administration that was, in practice, run by others.
