Additional information

Rana Bahadur Shah came to the throne as an infant in 1777 following the death of his father Pratap Singh Shah, making his the longest nominal reign of the early Shah dynasty despite his eventual forced abdication in 1799. Coinage struck under his name during the regency period was effectively authorized by his grandmother Rajendra Lakshmi, who held real power through much of the 1780s. The political instability of that regency — marked by factional warfare among the Thapa and Pande nobles — had little apparent effect on mint output, which continued the Gorkhali silver tradition established after Prithvi Narayan Shah's unification of Nepal in 1768.
