Reverse description The enthroned figure of the Virgin Mary occupies the center of the reverse, depicted facing front, crowned and nimbed, holding the Christ Child on her left arm and a cross-tipped scepter in her right hand, set upon a decorative throne or pedestal. The design reflects the Venetian devotion to the Madonna as protectress of the Republic. The circular Latin legend ·TIBI·SOLI··GLORIA· ('To Thee alone be glory') surrounds the figure, a standard Venetian pious inscription of the period. A mintmaster's mark or control letters appear in the exergue below the throne. The reverse style is consistent with hammered silver coinage of the Venice Mint under the mid-sixteenth century Dogate.
