Leonardo Loredan's reign as Doge coincided with one of the most punishing stretches in Venetian history — the War of the League of Cambrai saw nearly every major European power allied against the Republic simultaneously, stripping Venice of most of its terraferma possessions between 1509 and 1517. The mocenigo, introduced under his predecessor Mocenigo and retained here, was the workhorse denomination of Venetian Levantine trade throughout this period, circulating as far east as Alexandria and Constantinople despite the Republic's continental humiliations.
Dies from this reign show considerable variety in the rendering of the Doge's name across the issue's two decades — Paolucci documents at least three distinct legend treatments.
