Ganja fell to Russian forces under General Tsitsianov in January 1804, making this 1801 piece one of the final coins struck under the Khanate's own authority before the city was absorbed into the expanding Caucasian frontier of the Russian Empire. The Ganja Khanate had been a nominally autonomous Persian vassal, and its coinage acknowledged Fath 'Ali Shah's suzerainty — hence the shah's name on the issue — while the local khan retained practical administrative control.
The Type F3 designation reflects die classification within a series that scholars have found difficult to sequence precisely, given the short window of independent minting at Ganja.
