Egypt's transition to a republic in 1953, following the Free Officers' Movement that deposed King Farouk, prompted a wholesale redesign of the coinage. The "large Sphinx with base outlined" variety is one of several die variations produced across this short window — the outlined base distinguishes it from the earlier iteration and reflects the kind of incremental die modification common when a mint is working through multiple engravers during a transitional political period.
Production ran only two years before the type was superseded, keeping total mintage modest.
