Tunisia's 1960 coinage program was among the first issued under the Banque Centrale de Tunisie, established just two years earlier following independence from France in 1956. The millième denominations were struck in aluminium precisely because the new central bank needed large quantities of low-value coins at minimal cost — the fractional currency infrastructure under the French protectorate had to be rebuilt almost from scratch.
