Aversbeschreibung Plain copper field surrounds a raised square frame at center, within which a circular perforation passes through the flan, evoking the form of traditional Chinese cash coinage. The circumferential Latin legend reads 'HONG-KONG' at the upper arc and 'ONE MIL.' at the lower arc, separated on each side by a raised dot, all set between two concentric raised rims. No effigy is present; the design is purely typographic and geometric in character.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse mirrors the obverse in its central motif, displaying the same raised square frame surrounding the central circular hole. Four large Chinese characters are disposed around the perforation in the cardinal positions — 香 (above), 一 (right), 港 (below), 文 (left) — reading 'Hong Kong One Mil' in the traditional clockwise manner associated with Chinese cash coins. The field is plain and bounded by two concentric raised rims, with no additional ornamentation.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Hong Kong's mil denominations were never popular in circulation — merchants found them practically useless, and the public largely ignored them. These 1862–63 trial strikes predate the decision to formally abandon the mil as a circulating unit, placing them at the exact moment the colonial administration was still debating whether the denomination was worth pursuing at all. The multiple pattern references reflect several distinct die and compositional trials conducted across that window, none of which resulted in a coin the public ever spent.
