Liberland — the self-proclaimed micronation occupying a disputed 7 km² strip of land between Croatia and Serbia on the western bank of the Danube — declared independence in April 2015, exploiting a quirk of post-Yugoslav border demarcation that left the territory unclaimed by either state.
