Obverse description Bare-headed and draped bust of Elector Maximilian II Emanuel facing right, his voluminous curled periwig falling to the shoulder in the baroque court fashion. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and drapery. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, divided by pellet stops, recording the elector's titles and dignities. The field is smooth and slightly concave, and the coin is struck within a finely reeded border.

Reverse description The Virgin Mary, crowned and robed, is enthroned upon a large baroque heraldic shield bearing the quartered arms of Bavaria and the Palatinate, a putto at her side. She holds a sceptre and supports the Christ Child, who extends his arm in blessing. The date 1717 appears divided across the field to either side of the central group. The circular legend reads CLYPEVS OMNIB' IN TE SPERANTIB, meaning 'A shield to all who trust in Thee', a Marian devotional motto befitting the devoutly Catholic Wittelsbach court.
