Simon August ruled Lippe from 1734 until his death in 1782, presiding over a small but administratively active county in Westphalia that punched above its weight in coinage output relative to its territory. Billon issues of this type were workhorses of petty commerce in the fragmented German states, where dozens of local authorities exercised minting rights under the loose framework of the Holy Roman Empire.
KM#196 is not a frequently encountered piece in any grade — Lippe's total minting volumes were modest, and billon survives poorly when it does circulate.
