Finland's shift to copper-nickel for the markka in 1921 came less than four years after independence from Russia, during a period when the young republic was still stabilizing its monetary system following the brutal Civil War of 1918. The Mint of Finland, operating under considerable economic strain, adopted the alloy partly in response to postwar metal market pressures across Europe.
The series ran only through 1924, after which the denomination was not struck again in this composition.
