Finland's 1916 gold mark notes were issued under Russian imperial suzerainty — the Bank of Finland operated with unusual autonomy for a Grand Duchy, and the trilingual titling on this series reflects that awkward constitutional position precisely: Finnish first, Swedish second, Russian third, in that order, which itself was a small political statement during a period of fierce Russification pressure.
The "kullassa" / "i guld" / "zolotom" designation is notable. By 1916 there was no gold backing these notes in any practical sense — Russia's wartime finances had long since severed convertibility, and Finland's monetary system was being dragged along with them.
