Issued by the communal treasury of Kościerzyna district in 1920, this note is a product of the administrative chaos that followed the redrawing of the German-Polish border after Versailles. The Kościerzyna powiat was assigned to the reconstituted Polish state under the Treaty of Versailles, but the transfer of actual authority was neither immediate nor clean — local emergency scrip of this kind filled the gap.
The printer, Bodenstein & Miehike, operated out of Danzig, which by the time of printing had been declared a Free City under League of Nations protection. A Polish district commissioning emergency currency from a press located in a jurisdictionally contested foreign city-state is not a bureaucratic footnote — it speaks directly to how improvised the infrastructure of the early Second Republic actually was.
