Namibia's independence on March 21, 1990 created an immediate problem: the new Bank of Namibia needed a currency, but the Namibian dollar wouldn't be introduced until 1993. Trial strikes like this one were produced during that transitional window as the bank explored coinage options, even as South African rand continued to circulate as legal tender. Most of these pieces went to government archives or were distributed among officials — virtually none entered circulation.
