Obverse description Central field displays the crowned coat of arms of Sweden, featuring the three crowns and the lion passant of the Vasa dynasty, rendered in a late Renaissance heraldic style. The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown with elaborate ornamentation. A circular Latin legend surrounds the arms, reading MONETA·NOVA·REGNI·SVECIEA, partly visible around the coin's periphery. The die work is typical of late 16th-century Swedish hammered coinage, with slightly uneven strike and irregular flan edges.

Additional information

Sigismund III Vasa was elected King of Poland in 1587 and inherited the Swedish throne in 1592 upon the death of his father Johan III. This coin was struck during his brief effective rule over Sweden before his uncle, Duke Karl, systematically stripped him of power. The Swedish nobility's deep hostility to Sigismund's Catholicism made his position untenable almost from the start.

By 1599 the Riksdag formally deposed him. Coins struck under his Swedish authority thus span fewer than seven years, and the 1593 date falls within the very first year of his contested reign.
