Gottesberg — today Boguszów-Gorce in southwest Poland — was a coal town, and the Schlesische Kohlen- & Cokes-Werke issued this note in 1914 as emergency Notgeld, almost certainly in the weeks following the outbreak of war when coin hoarding stripped small denominations from circulation almost overnight. Private industrial firms issuing their own scrip was entirely legal under the circumstances and briefly common in mining regions, where workers needed to be paid and the Reichsbank could not keep up.
The Stadtblatt-Druckerei was Gottesberg's local newspaper press — a practical choice under wartime conditions, not a security printing house. The watermark is the only concession to anti-counterfeiting.
