Egon Tschirch was a Rostock-born painter and graphic artist who became closely associated with the city's cultural identity in the early twentieth century — his involvement here was not a commercial commission so much as a civic one. The Frühjahrs Woche, or Spring Week, was a regional trade and cultural festival, and this note was issued as promotional notgeld tied to it rather than as emergency currency in any strict sense.
Carl Boldt's Hofbuchdruckerei had been the court printer in Rostock for decades, which made them the natural choice for municipally sponsored print work of this kind. The 1922 dating places it deep in the inflationary period, when German cities were producing notgeld in quantities that far outstripped any genuine monetary need.
