Rees is a small Rhine town in the lower Rhine district of Westphalia, and this 1921 Notgeld piece is exactly what you'd expect from a Bürgermeisterei-level issuer during the height of the German small-change crisis: locally printed, locally circulated, and almost certainly redeemed within months. Franz Knippenberg was a Rees printer — no Frankfurt or Berlin intermediary here — which kept production costs minimal but also limited print quality and paper durability.

The Bürgermeisterei designation places this below city-level administration, a township authority issuing emergency currency largely because coins had simply vanished from daily commerce. Surviving examples frequently show heavy fold wear along a central horizontal crease, consistent with notes folded into purses rather than handled flat.
