Obverse description The Hamburg civic arms are prominently displayed at centre, depicting a fortified white castle with three towers on a red field, surmounted by a crested helmet topped with a radiating fan crest. Two rampant lions serve as heraldic supporters flanking the shield on either side, each facing inward. The design rests on an elaborate foliate and scroll mantling. The circular legend FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG arcs around the upper periphery, with the mint mark J appearing in the lower field beneath the arms. A beaded border frames the entire composition.
