Oranienburg was among the first Nazi concentration camps, established in March 1933 in a disused brewery north of Berlin. It closed in 1935 when the SS consolidated camp administration under the new Sachsenhausen facility nearby, making the operational window for this scrip unusually short. The internal currency was mandatory — prisoners' money was confiscated and replaced with camp-issued Lagergeld, theoretically redeemable at the camp canteen but functioning primarily as a control mechanism over any residual economic activity within the wire.
Surviving examples are rare. The camp's brief existence and the destruction of materials during and after the war account for that.
